CIVVIE --- RASQL - Tail ripped open !!!

Hi....need help....can't afford vet visit.

One of my civvies (Rasql) has a gigantic rip in her tail...she is indoor kitty and likes to stay in room away from my other kittehs. I have no clue as to what happened.

When I was looking at it this morning, she almost ripped my head off and was screaming soooo loud. I was gentle and hugging her, but she just wanted to get away from me. Of course all of the other kittehs came running to see what all the noise was about....one of them actually jumped on my back and was growling !!!!! That made Rasql scream even louder.

QUESTION: I use Neosporin w/pain CREME for my sugar-cat's (Rumpelteazer) ears after poking. Do you think if I put some of that on Rasql's wound it will help?

It says not to put on open wounds that are deep.

If you can, gently clean it with warm water.

Wrap w/ the stretchy, self-adhering wrap.

A cone to prevent her messing with it might be useful.

If there is bleeding, apply direct pressure to the wound. The wound should be covered with sterile gauze or a clean cloth, and then pressure applied. It may take 5 to 10 minutes for bleeding to stop. Once it does, tape the gauze in place; removing it may remove the clot and bleeding will restart.

Check for other wounds.

If there is no bleeding and the cut (laceration) or scrape (abrasion) appears minor, try cleaning the wound. Use an antiseptic solution or plain water and gauze or a cloth (not cotton) to gently clean around the wound, and a syringe or similar device to flush the solution over the surface of the wound. Antiseptic solutions are made by diluting concentrated solutions bought at the store that contain either povidone iodine or chlorhexidine diacetate as the active ingredient. Do not use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on the wounds, as these will actually damage the tissue. 
Povidone should be diluted to the color of weak tea; chlorhexidine should be diluted to pale blue.

If the laceration is long or deep, or if it is a puncture wound, you can clean around the edges as already described, but do not flush the wound itself. Let the veterinarian do that.
Once you have done all that you can, take your cat to your veterinarian.
 
I would take her to the vet, it sounds like she will have to have it sewn up, if its real bad I would be very hesitant to treat at home as it could become infected. She may need to be knocked out and have it sewn up then have a good round of antibiotics.

They will only accept credit/debit card from me. OR tell me to apply for that 'care credit' (I think that is what is called) thing. My credit is in the sh***er....so I would be denied. :YMSIGH: :sad:

OMG !!! What it looks like is this .... fur is off ..... no bleeding .... tail skin is showing and is all reddish color. Wound is about 1-1/2 inches long on both sides of tail. Is there a place I can post a pic.....if I can get her to hold still to take one?

Fur is off. I can see the tail "skin" and it kind of does look like a burn would.....all reddish colored.

I have to run to bank and deposit pay check before my account OD's....I will try to get pic when I get back. Please pray for me when I try to get pic....she is going to be VERY ANGRY !!!! Why me?????? <<<<bangs head on desk>>>>

If the skin is actually intact and only the fur is missing, note that fur is designed to release and pull out so the skin does NOT tear. The area may be sore yes, maybe irritated and inflammed, but may not need anything done to it.

If it is a burn as opposed to just the fur being pulled out, some burn gel and wrap over that (so it can't be licked) may sooth it a bit.
 
Sounds like she may have caught her tail in between something and pulled it out maybe scraping it?

Should probably keep an eye out around the house for where she lost her fur, could give you a clue on what happened. (bedsprings used to be a problem for my kitties, they had torn off the bottom cloth, I just stapled some more on.)

On of my other cats JaRule (thinks she is the alpha-cat) always picks on Rasql. Rasql has been 'hiding out' in my laundry room area on the storage shelves (they are not made of metal). As far as I know, there is nothing in the room that would rip her tail like that.
 
The cut looks like it needs to be seen by a vet.

Sending vines to your Rasql to heal quickly.

They look worse than a burn to me. Open wounds. Might need stitches. How deep is the wound?

It is not DEEP. The reddish area looks like it is just the "tail skin" if fur is removed.

When I checked on her before....she felt wet in the area. I don't know if she has been licking it or if it is oozing. There wasn't any blood on my fingers after I touched the area.

There isn't any skin that could be stitched. Reddish area is "the skin". Nothing is hanging off or available to be "stitched'.

Just wondering if a piece of skin has actually been torn off and this is the flesh underneath that you can see...?

It "might be" flesh ... it is very very hard to see. She screams and growls when I try to look. The neighbors are going to think I am killing/torturing her or something.....she is sooooooo loud !!! Hmmmm.....good thing most neighbors are at work now.

What if it is "flesh"???

BRB.....time to test my sugar-cat. The fun never ends . :roll:
 
My guess is if she screams and growls when you try to look at it, then it is very painful. If it were my cat I would take her in, it looks to me like she may require some stitches. pain meds and quite possible antibiotics.
Do you have any low cost clinics in the area? In Ohio we have a few low cost places where you can take your pets.

I will check...but I have never heard of one. I am totally broke & I just got paid today.
 
I wonder if DCIN might be able to help with this or set up an account for others to donate to Rasql's cause? It doesn't hurt to check with them. Maybe send a PM to Venita?
 
That color is not likely skin. Reminds me of one of my cats growing up that got under the car hood ... which we didn't know until the car was started. When we found him. a chunk of skin had been torn out, leaving a hole. It needed cleaning, and I blieve it may have had a stitch or two.

Smallish wounds may heal by secondary intention - letting it heal in from the edges. You have to watch closely for signs of infection, even if bandaged. The resulting scar is bigger (had that happen on my hand where a stich got infected and released.)

You can find it in a pet store near you (go to vetericyn.com to find a store near you that carries it). Call to make sure they have it. Amazon carries it. It costs @ $30.00 (you'll never need to buy it again ... she's had the same bottle for many years) for 16 oz or about $15 - 16 for 4 oz.
Can be used for horses, cats, other animals. She's been using it for many years, both for her horse and cats.

She came right out of her "snuggle-buggle" hiding spot at supper time and ate Fancy Feast + some dry food. She has water and litter box and favorite 'mouse-spinner-toy' as usual in the room. IF you are wondering, her current version of the "snuggle-buggle" is a low box with soft towel in it for sleeping. "Snuggle-buggle"s change periodically....cat-bed or blankie or under a chair or on top of dining room hutch ( :roll: ) or on a chair. She likes the 'hiding spot' the past few weeks.

Purrrred when I pet her head.

I tried to touch her tail.....she just hissed at me.....did not growl. I did not go any farther as to try to pick her up to get a good look at tail, so I am not sure if she would have 'screamed' or not.

Eyes are bright and she acts just like her normal self. Meaning....shy + afraid of everything + likes to be in a space/room all by herself. If I didn't already know about tail issue, I would not think that anything was wrong with her.

Will post in the AM with another update. I will be going to bed soon....up for job at 1:00AM.

This stuff works amazingly, and even on humans! I call it magic. :lol: I would still get Rasql checked out by a vet if you can, especially because it sounds really painful and you might need some pain meds.
