Insulin Not Working Question
by catman31 » Fri Nov 18, 2011 1:05 pm

I am knew to this forum. My kitty was diagnosed with diabetes a month ago. He spent a week at the vets. He did go back for a glucose test curve and all seemed well. But his insulin dosage was increased. He was on PZI. He became very ill and from what I have read on line, I believe that he became "hypo". I took him back to the vet and he has been there 4 days now. The vet asked me if I had dropped the insulin or left it out of the frig. I assured the vet that I had not. The vet said that the insulin was not working. So they opened a new bottle of the same insulin and this morning called and says that it is not working. They are switching him to human insulin NPH. Does anyone know of cases where insulin stopped working?catman31

i will be careful not to advise you here as I'm a newbie here too. But i have read that many cats act differently to the insulin what works for one won't necessarily work for another. My FD Tilly was in the vets for 3 days and nights whilst she was on Caninsulin which doesn't work for her and had a bad hypo but whilst there they discovered she had a nasty infection as well.

It is quite possible that it is not working at the vet because your cat is stressed there -strange noises, animals, environment. Stress raises bg levels. There are cats here who are 100-200 points higher at the vet than the first test taken when they get home. If you can get him home and start testing at home, it is likely that you can see exactly how the insulin is working. That is next to impossible in the vet environment.

If he went hypo, then the insulin was working. Another reason that it is important to start testing at home so you can be sure the dose you are planning to give is safe.

PZi is a much better insulin than NPH (Humulin N) It is harsh and tends not to last an entire cycle. We have very few cats here on Humulin; for most it is too difficult to regulate with.

If you want our help, we can teach you to test over the internet. Then get the PZI and bring him home. Start getting some numbers and see how it is working. I know it is hard to trust people on the internet over your vet, but our protocol has helped thousands of cats into regulation and remission. We would love to help you and your cat.

Hi Catman31,

Here is a link to your second post which has identical topic and received quite a few details replies:

Please read the replies on your second post -- I'm reposting the link here so people don't spend valuable time retyping their responses a second time.

Then respond either on that post or come back here -- when you add a REPLY, that post will pop up to the top of the forum list.

Oh - I see your second post above is in the PZI insulin support group, where-as this one is in Health -- reply where-ever it will be easier for you.

Glad you came back - we'd like to help you and your cat.
Phoebe
