    Hi Bo,

I haven't heard of using pepcid ac to stimulate appetite but I don't think it would hurt. I think it's mainly for acid reduction. Mirtz (mirtazapine?) is often used as a stimulant. You might go find CF & Meowzi...

It will not help increase appetite but it will help if the tummy is upset. It won't hurt to give Jake some. How long has his appetite been poor?

I have also used mirtazapine to stimulate the appetite and it was amazing how well it worked.
I hope Jake is eating better real soon!

I've been using FortiFlora on Ennis's food. He is hungry, but he will just sniff at the plate and turn his head away. A little sprinkle of FF gets him interested in the food, and he will finish the whole thing.

With Ennis, I often find that adding water will help him be more interested. Not sure why, maybe he just finds it easier to eat.

And sometimes he just wants to eat in the office, not in the bedroom. Can't figure that out either. Probably because he is a social eater and wants a person around.

    Hi Bo,

sorry to hear jake's appy is not good. Of course it is always best to find out why. ( vet visit)

in the meantime I cut and paste for you from a previous post of mine suggestions on stimulating appetite in kitties. keep us posted on Jake !!

Remember -- getting to the bottom of why he is not eating is most important. That way you can treat the underlying cause ( or symptoms of underlying cause) . It is always very important to get cats to eat, as they can quickly develop hepatic lipidosis from lack of food.

Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
    - heating food

    sprinkle food with :
    - forta flora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
    - parm. cheese
    - smashed crumbles of dry food
    - bonito tuna flakes
    - halo chicken treats -- crumble into dust over food -- my Wolfie loves this stuff.
    - poor a little water from tuna in water over food ( I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats-- check labels)
-powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
    - trader joe tuna for cats
-baby food -- beechnut turkey and broth or chicken and broth. they have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
    - kentucky fried chicken
    - deli turkey /chicken
    - plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
-canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
    - chicken broth -- low sodium

If enticements don't work, you should consider:
-assist feeding ( syringe or make little meatballs and place in mouth)
-and/or talking to your vet about appetite stimulents ( mirtazapine or cyproheptidine)

and if those fail talking to your vet about feeding tubes
    - Here is Dr. Lisa's link on feeding tubes :

Sorry to hear Jake's appetite is off a bit.
You have received lots of good info and suggestions already, so I thought I would tell you what I do with Shadoe - she is picky but who knows if she is feeling crappy or just being a picky little princess?

There are some foods that Shadoe just LOVES and also some snacks. I tried forti flora and she really loves that stuff!

So, if she seems off and meatloafing or keeping to herself, I test her. I know what she likes and if they don't get her to eat, then I watch her reaction. I should say that she makes it hard because she sits like a meatloaf frequently.

If she suddenly gobbles up her fave foods, she was just playing me.
If she sniffs but does not eat, I put some forti flora on top.
If she gobbles with that sprinkled on top, she was just playing me for the sprinkles.
If she just licks the sprinkles off or worse, just sniffs then looks away, I try with 1/4 tab of pepcid.
If it settles down her stomach and offers of food are taken, then I think she just had an upset stomach, but I keep an eye on her. If it seems to help her, then I give her no more than a total of 1/2 of the 10mg tab for a couple days, just to calm down whatever has upset her.

If you have an upset stomach or feel a bit queasy, I bet you don't have much of an appetite either.
I always has the pepcid handy as I never know if she is playing me, or maybe some p-itis is going to show up. I watch for her BG to go up too.

If he is just a bit off, and nothing happened suddenly, plus if he is not acting vastly different from normal, do a few tests and gather some info to tell the vet.

It's always best to have the vet check everything when you notice changes that concern you. I would rather spend money for b/w and a checkup to find nothing than be at home worrying.

I hope Jake starts gobbling his foods and you have to run out to the store for more cuz he ate everything!
